The Future of the Past | Hommage à Sara Levy
program trailer The Future of the Past - Hommage à Sara Levy The enigmatic traces of two trio sonatas by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach lead ensemble freymut to the exciting life story of the Berlin musician and patron Sara Levy. In her salon, she received famous guests such as Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn, Bettina Brentano and E. T. A. Hoffmann. Her important collection of music laid the foundation for the “Bach Renaissance” in Berlin, which led to the rediscovery of the St. Matthew Passion by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. In “The Future of the Past - Hommage à Sara Levy”, ensemble freymut combines compositions from the 18th century with contemporary music. Works by Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach meet an artistic approach by Daniel Serrano (*1991). The Andalusian composer completes a fragment by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach and draws compositional ideas from Sara Levy's collection for an hommage to the musician and patron - a multifaceted musical adventure that touches across the centuries and connects Early Music with Contemporary Music.

Reflections2020 - Music Video // ensemble freymut
Reflections2020 is an art project in which baroque music, acting and visual media come together and provide our audience with both a wake-up call and strength for the future. 2020 was a challenging year for all of us. Especially in times like these, however, preserving the arts is necessary, as they provide us with perspective, support us and enable communication. They also teach us humanity and bring us closer together. It was important to us to stay active in these times and show how artists and the cultural scene at large are doing at the moment. That’s why we created this music video. François Couperin’s music has been part of our repertoire since the beginning of 2020. It has been of great mental support for us during the challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis. The piece we selected is multifaceted and symbolises this past year. The visuals confront with truths and unsettle, but equally radiate peace and reward with pleasant moments, too. Light and shadow are in direct contrast. If you want to learn more about our project you can check out our page or visit us on facebook!
